Swords

Until firearms were available the weapon of choice for close contact fighting was the battle sword.  This weapon was so valuable that its owner often named their swords.

Charlemagne who was the King of a vast empire in Medieval times conquered a great part of Europe by utilizing acute military acumen.  He also had a longsword that was called "Joyeuse."  With this sword by his side he became the ruler of the Frankish empire and was elected the Holy Roman Emperor.  The leaders during this period of time owned more than one sword.  For the special occasion of the anointing of the Holy Roman Emperor, he did not use his battle sword.  He used a special decorative sword for this important event.  It was a beautiful sword that was cast of gold; today this sword would be called a collectible sword.

The most well known sword from ancient times was Excalibur, which came from the lore of Medieval Europe.  A boy was able to pull a sword from a stone and in doing so he became the ruler of the magical kingdom called Camelot. The boy became the noble King Arthur.   The sword according to the legend possessed magical powers that contributed to Arthur's success in battle. When Arthur was defeated in battle and was near death, the sword was thrown into a large lake, and Arhur's body was taken away and never appeared in the lake again.  According to this Medieval legend, he will come again and re-establish the perfect kingdom of Camelot. Replicas of Excalibur are very collectible swords.

Just like Medieval times, we have many types of swords today.  Every individual who happens to be a sword enthusiast should be aware of the type of sword that fits his purpose.

Re-enactors actively recreate the battles of the past.  The active participants wear armor, engage in sword-play and fight until a winner is declared.  There are two types of swords that are employed in a battle reenactment, the battle ready sword or the practical sword.  The difference in these two types of swords is the blade.  The battle sword is a live sword; it has a sharp blade and if a mistake is made in swordplay, an oponent can be hurt.  The practical sword has an unsharpened blade and a blunt tip.  Naturally the practical sword is the safest choice for this sport, but those who are experienced in swordplay often choose the battle ready sword.  TheCastleCourt has a selection of both types of swords;  we carry CAS/Hanwei battle ready swords and practical swords.  We also carry Windlass Steelcrafts and

A really safe alternative for swordplay and sparring is the new synthetic  sword.  TheCastleCourt offers a heavy synthetic sparring sword that is absolutely safe for practice.  The sword comes in a longsword, a single hand sword and a basket hilt sword.  The components of this sword are interchangeable so essentially you can create your perfect sparring sword.

One of the most popular sports involving historic weapons is LARP or Live Action Role Play.  LARP involves fantasy games that are very competitive.  The participants use LARP swords; these swords are made of latex and are so decorative that they resemble a really fine collectible sword.  They are more supple than the practice sparring sword.  TheCastleCourt sells Calimacil and Windlass LARP swords.

If you do not want to become involved in actual swordplay, a collectible sword is the perfect choice.  Collectible swords are beautiful replicas that create the ancient times that require no more effort than showing them off.  TheCastleCourt has striking collectible swords that recreate every era.  We carry Denix (the blade cannot be sharpened), Armaduras Medievales, Art Gladius, and Marto.  With this selection of collectible swords, we have a sword for every budget.  Some of the best known collectible swords are Excalibur, the crusader swords, Joyeuse, Richard the Lionheart swords, swords of the Samurai, Spanish swords, fantasy swords, Roman swords, etc. These swords are suitable for decorators that want that perfect piece for the historical enthusiast

The Japanese or Samurai replica swords are the most popular for eastern Martial Arts.  The eastern Martial Arts evolved from very ancient times in China and Japan.  The most well known group of warriors were the Samurai of Japan.  Th Japanese culture during this time mbraced Zen Buddha.  The Samurai warrior's evolved around this disciplined religious belief.

The Japanese warrior revered his sword and like the western warrior he wrote poems praising his sword and these blades were often left as sacrifices at a fallen comrade's grave. Whatever mystical powers were attributed to the Samurai sword, it was built with human sweat and toil.  The process of forging a Katana, the Samurai longsword, took months.  When finished it was the finest blade ever constructed.  Then in the final act in finishing the sword, the delicate work of the artisans inspired by the old Shinto legends (Japan's first indigenous religion, which included the worship of spirit Gods) lifted the Samurai sword from being a mere weapon, and in the mind of its bearers gave it a touch of the divine.

TheCastleCourt offers Japanese and Chinese swords that are forged employing the forging methods of the ancient times.  CAS/Hanwei's factory in China forges some of the most outstanding eastern Martial Arts swords ever made.
